Join us in our first Pink Friday!

The Pink Rose Cottage is please to announce that we are now a part of Make Mine Pink! Please join us in our first Pink Friday.

Comforts of Home!

Please join us for shopping with a twist on Friday November 13, 2009 as we present "Comforts of Home"

When I think of the comforts of home, I picture a favorite sweater, soft and worn with time. Sitting by the fire, wrapped in a quilt that my mother made so many years ago bring back so many memories of home. Looking around, there are framed photographs on the wall, some of people I see every day, and others of friends of loved ones that once touched my life , yet are no longer with us. The memories woven, remain alive and an important part of our lives. The antique clock that my great-grandmother cherished, chimes the hour in the next room, and the crackling of the fire seems in tune, counting the minutes.

As I sip my tea from a special antique cup and saucer that was once a part of my grandmother's treasured collections, I can't help but remember and smile. No one made a tea party more special than she did. At the end, we'd read our tea leaves as if we could tell the future. Mine was always filled with wonderful things that were sure to come true.

The fragrance of potpourri simmering on the stove, reminiscent of holiday get-togethers, gingerbread and pumpkin pie, and mingling with memories of my mother's kitchen on any Sunday or holiday, fills my senses. The lit candles, with rich and spicy scents, cast soft shadows around the room, lighting up corners with thoughts of familiar voices and laughter.

The comforts of home reach out from the past and wind their way into those of the present. Our homes, stamped with our own distinct style, with just a touch of nostalgia mixed in. Grandmother's teacup, the glaze finely crazed with age, sitting on the shelf alongside a favorite new set of coffee mugs. A vintage lamp standing tall, surrounded by candlelight. Among the faded family photographs hangs a framed print that makes you smile just because. A treasured worn sweater lies in a dresser drawer beside a brand new knit cardigan. On the sofa beside me, the colors of a new quilting project are bright compared to the quilt my mother made.

It's the little touches from generations past that help to make our house a home. Each item is so different from the others, yet nothing feels out of place. It just feels like home.

From the Halls of Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORP!

My dad - a proud Marine!

My dad with my Grandma - A proud Marine Mom!

“From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
On the land as on the sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in ev’ry clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines

Here’s health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.”

Pink Angels!

These pink cuties were a recent find at a church rummage sale. It was late in the day and I was actually taking some things to donate to the thrift store and passed the unadvertised sale. I didn't expect to find anything after the crowds had been though. So I guess these little pink angels are meant to brighten my vintage Christmas display!

Grape Jelly 2009

My husband and I made some grape jelly last night. The kitchen spelled divine! And we did a lot of taste testing too! We didn't think we'd get any done this year as the H1N1 has knocked up for a loop. But fortunately now that we're feeling a little better the farmer down the road still have a few grapes left!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Hope everyone has a fun Halloween! Let's share some ghost stories!

My oldest daughter and I were at a local florist. It's a darling and quaint shop in an old building. It is known around the area that they have a ghost. We were waiting for our arrangement and all of the sudden a door of a cabinet we were standing next to just opened. It was closed tightly. I know because I was admiring it because it was a beautiful antique. So I said to the owner, that must be your resident ghost. She said no that he always makes himself known to her when he is around. Don't know what it was, or how it opened, but it was kinda neat and not too scary!

This fun vintage looking Halloween house is a recent find a Marshalls. A great bargain too as it was marked down to $6.00! Has a tag on it "Vintage Collections by Bethany." I think it might be a Bethany Lowe. If so, an even better bargain! So if you get a chance to check out your local Marshalls, you might be able to pick up a few treats!

Time for Goodies...

I won these gorgeous pink rose pumpkins from Ronda at Tempting Textiles. They are so pretty and feminine! A touch of fall without the traditional colors! And I wish you could smell how wonderful their scent is! Ronda packed them with a little sachet. It's just divine! Please check out Tempting Textiles. Rhonda has lovely items I think you'll enjoy!

One of the best things about having a webstore and a blog is meeting people from all over that I wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to meet. Denise M. lives all the way across the country from me in Washington.

Denise is such a sweetie! I find this gorgeous hand decorated package in my mailbox and I just had to say oooohhhhhh....And inside is a set of beautiful pink rose postcards and a pair of linen guest towels with...guess what??...Pink polka dots!! How wonderful!!! The towels, well they are so ME! I want to find some frames to make a collage of the pink rose cards on the wall. Thank you Denise!! What a wonderful surprise!

Here's a fun and unexpected find from this past weekend. I was at a garage sale and picked up a little baggie of buttons. I asked the man how much they were. He said, "Oh you like buttons?" Of course! He said hold on I have more....comes out with this gorgeous glass container full of buttons! Gave me a terrific price too! I don't know what I'm more excited about...more buttons to sort...or the fabulous container!

Happy Monday my friends!!

20 Years Ago Today.....

husband and I were married. It was such a gorgeous autumn day. Warm and sunny with the leaves at their peak. Just perfect.

It was Friday the 13th. My future brother-in-law stood on the steps of the chapel and said, "Friday the 13th, black bridesmaids dresses, and a full moon. Yeah...I give this marriage 2 weeks." Well, I guess we proved him wrong! LOL!

This is us on our honeymoon in the Poconos. (I spared you the picture of us in our heart-shaped bathtub!)

The Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club

I LOVE vintage tablecloths! In fact they are pretty much an obsession for me! When I joined The Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club I had 44 tablecloths in my collection. None I spent more then a dollar on at a garage sale.

Today, well I haven’t counted but, I estimate I have upwards of 500 tablecloths. I’ve spread my collecting wings and now hunt antique stores, ebay and online shops. But a garage sale find is still my biggest thrill!

My very favorite cloths are Wilendurs. Followed by Broderie and anything pink! Florals are up there with cloths that make me go Ahhhhh….and if they are roses, well you know that thrills me!!

If you haven’t stopped over at The Vintage Tablecloth Lovers Club in a while, you might not know about our Tablecloth Database. The TLC now has the only searchable tablecloth identification database! It’s really wonderful. A quick and easy way to put a manufacturer and pattern name to your tablecloth. This database was created and is maintained by TLC members. So you know this is an amazing collection all in one place!

Please stop by. We’d love to have you as a member! Not only will you enjoy the database, you’ll meet a lot of nice people who share a passion for vintage linens.

And a reminder….If you haven’t signed up for The Pink Rose Cottage giveaway, please do so now. Entries accepted through Friday, October 2 until midnight. Good luck!

Time flies....

What happened to August? Did I sleep through it? And now we’re starting the second week of September!?! When I was a kid time just seemed to drag…Christmas was so far way….School days were soooo long……My mom use to say, just wait til you’re older, it just flies by! Is that ever true!

It’s already time for our annual neighborhood garage sale. Even though it’s later in the month this year (for 30 years it’s been the first Saturday after Labor Day), I’m not quite prepared. Partly because I wasn’t sure I was going to participate and partly because time just got away from me. But my mom is bringing things over to sell, so I decided to purge too. Although I’d much rather shop!

I’ll be back to routine sometime next week. I missed reading every ones blogs daily, but did peek in when I could. Hopefully after this week life will get back on schedule!

See you soon! Take care my friends!

I Love This Time of the Year!

I'm so excited when the little farm market opens around the corner from us. The owner grows her own flowers and puts them together beautifully!I enjoy their fresh veggies too but the flower bouquets are the best!

A Treasure From My Grandma

I've had this old box since I was twelve. I keep it tucked under my bed. Every now and then I pull it out and look at the treasures it holds. Today I was suppose to be working, but the box was calling me. I haven't visited it in a long time.
Every time I open it I give a little gasp at the beauty of the treasures it holds.

Brown velvet ribbon and pink and teal silk grapes.

There are soft pastel wreaths and rosettes still on the mesh backing.

One lone little bouquet of calla lilies.

Rosette trios.

Blue pansies trimmed in gold.

Roses and more in beautiful jewel tones with gold trim.

I'm not sure when or how I got my treasures. I know they were my grandmothers. I've only ever used three. I sewed them to the christening gown my daughters wore when they were baptized. Those are put away with the gown for their daughters.

I must have been thinking about the box today because it's my grandmothers birthday. I lost her to breast cancer when I was twelve. She was only 62. As I get older I understand how truly young she was.

She was strong, beautiful and talented. She loved antiques and had a wonderful store. I inherited my love of vintage from her. I wish I would have inherited her creativity gene too. She was a wonderful seamstress. She never shied from a large project. After my grandfather died, she sold their farm house and moved into a charming little cottage-like home. She didn't like the old refrigerator. It was yellow. So she covered it, top to bottom, in fabric to match her kitchen curtains and chair pads. It was beautiful!

She moved in with us when she was at her sickest but kept her home as we all thought she would get well and go back. The day after she died, her home caught fire burning a large portion of it almost completely to the ground. Not much survived, mostly things in the back bedrooms. I'm not sure if my treasure was in her home or her shop, but it's my own little gift from her. I only had her for twelve years, but she has shaped me in many ways. The baby picture on the home page of my website is her. I know she helps me live my dream.

Love you and miss you Grandma! Happy Birthday!

Weekend Finds...

Hope all had a wonderful weekend. The summer is going so fast! But then again, it always does! My parents and I took a ride up to New York state to visit a few of our favorite antique shops. On the way we found a wonderful estate sale. It was the third day of the sale, but the old farm house was still full of treasures. Here are a few of my favorites.

Music books with beautiful ladies

Vintage Advertising Cards

A photograph of a beautiful little girl

Embossed pink rose and violets greeting card

Silver napkin ring

My favorite find – little sheets of face powder in a linen case hand painted with pink roses.

A booklet of soap leaves to carry in a purse or pocket

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
