Sweetheart Compacts

Of all the powder compacts in my collection, my World War II Sweetheart compacts are by far my favorite. I think they represent the best of America. Patriotism was the utmost importance and Americans rose to the challenge of the times.

Most of these compacts were probably sold in PX’s for the soldiers to bring home on leave. With the rationing of metals during the war, these were probably a splurge. They were given with love and pride. Pride in our country, pride in our military, and pride in the women left behind working to keep their family and country going strong. Each one has a story we’ll never know. But every time I touch them I think about the woman who used them. What was she like? How did she cope with the war and her loved one being gone and not knowing what the next day will bring? And does she know now how grateful we are today for what this entire generation has done for us?

Air Force and V for Victory Compacts

Military Hat Compacts

Here are some contemporary patriotic power compacts. “The New York Spirit” (apple) compact and the smaller “America the Beautiful” compact were released after 9/11. Although they may have been in the works before the attack on September 11th, at the time of release, these compacts were purchased with great pride and love for our country.

I also display my patriotic solid perfumes with my powder compacts. Definitely fun and go well with the rest of the theme.

And to the men and women serving our country today – a heartfelt THANK YOU! God Bless You and God Bless America.

Yesterday's Antiquing Finds

Twice a year, my home town has a nice, but small antique show. The autumn show is always the best and this year was no exception! I found lots of wonderful vintage and cottage chic goodies. Here a just a few of my finds.

Funny how the collecting powers of the universe work. I’ve been collecting vintage powder compacts for years. Lately I haven’t been pursing them. But three lovelies found me yesterday! These first two are from the 1933 Chicago Worlds Fair.

And I just fell for this charming little book. The cover is a soft green with gorgeous pink roses and a silver spine. And the seller, a wonderful shabby chic gal, added the matching ribbon and sweet tiny button. Oh, her booth was cottage heaven! I also picked up this cute filigree and silhouette powder compact. It’s an oldie and I just love it!

This gorgeous vintage Warner Christmas pin is a little early holiday splurge for me!

I picked up a lot of other sweet finds, and regret a few a left behind. But it was a wonderful day!

Antique Shadow Box

I just love the old frame and the workmanship that went into it. The inside needs new life. But what? All the accessories in it are glued in and together. Yes, that beautiful vintage purse - glued in! And I like the blue fabric background but I assume it’s ruined. So ladies? Any advice as to how to remove these items and any thoughts on what I should put in it? Until I’m hit with a charge of inspiration, I’ll hang it as is. It’s still sweet, but I need to make it mine….

Having one of those days???

We all have them. You know, when a bunch of “dumb” stuff happens to make the day generally lousy? Today it was a burnt out light bulb I couldn’t reach. Broken laundry line (okay, this one is bad! LOL). And a long to-do list that didn’t get done. But hey, it can always be worse!

Here’s a little something for those of you whose day didn’t go as planned.

Garden Delight

After a week of cold, rainy weather I was surprised to find a lot of hot Hungarian peppers still thriving on the plants in my garden. So I gratefully picked them and stuffed them with hot sausage and Monterey jack cheese. Yum!!!

Next week is suppose to be sunny and warm, so I’m looking forward to some more along with green peppers and a few tomatoes. Amazing for this time of the year!

Sunny's Story

This is Sunny our 10 year old Redbone Coonhound. Besides Daddy and treats, lying in the sun is her favorite thing in the world! How she came to be ours is a long story, but she was a rescue because she wouldn’t hunt. She’s very good, never makes messes in the house, never chews anything, and leaves the garbage alone. She’s petrified of thunderstorms. She loves to take walks. She doesn’t play much, most likely because of her early up bring as a hunting dog. But she loves to be with us and is really a sweetheart. And we love her to pieces!

Almost a year ago, we noticed she seemed to be slowing down a little. But given her age, we didn’t think much of it. She had some senior blood work done and they found protein in her urine. It progressed a bit and in the past 4 or 5 months, so we were actively looking for the cause of her kidney failure. Because of the renal failure, she now has high blood pressure and is on two different blood pressure medications. She is also on a low protein special diet. The veterinarians thought it may be an autoimmune disease, but weren’t really sure.

I subscribe to the online news letter DogAge. They send small informational emails occasionally. The last one I received was called, “Grapes of Intestinal Wrath.” This article stated that grapes and raisins were toxic to dogs. Feeding your dog grapes increases levels of nitrogen, creatinine, and phosphorous in their blood, which impairs kidney function and can cause kidney failure.

Now Miss Sunny loves grapes. She begs for grapes. We always share our grapes with her. During the fall we make grape jelly and grape juice. The entire family sits on the back porch and cleans grapes off the stems. Sunny is right there with us, begging for grapes. And a lot of the times just helps herself.

She went in to the vet today for her biweekly blood pressure check and I spoke with him about this. Although we’ll never know for sure, he feels that Sunny’s kidney problems are most likely caused by eating grapes. And given the amount that she eats and has eaten over the years he’s surprised that she’s alive and doing a well as she is.

I have quit feeding her grapes since reading the article and our vet thinks now we probably know the cause, there is a good chance she won’t get worse. She will never get better.

I just want to warn all the mom’s of furbabies, Please don’t feed them grapes!!!!! It seems like a nice healthy choice, but its toxic and can cause death in dogs. Some dogs rather quickly. So please give your pup a cuddle from us and stick with doggie treats.

My Garden Roses

Oh how I wish you could smell these beautiful roses! They smell glorious!

I only seem to have luck with my roses in the spring and the fall. But to have a little bouquet like this is so worth the wait! Pink roses coming soon!

Pink Fall

As beautiful as the colors of autumn are, I do miss my summer pinks. But at my mom’s house she has this stunning plant on her porch. I’m not sure what it is. All summer it was a beautiful maroon color. But since fall it’s taken on a deeper hue with a touch of deep red. And it pulls together the last shades of pink.
